Essentially, this meant that every time I loaded state for another try, an additional “open and close” of the status menu would have been added before I fought the Starman Super, advancing the random number generator a bit more. Then, every following try, I would open and close the status window (hitting B twice) and then save state again before approaching the Starman Super. Specifically, I located a lone Starman Super in the Stonehenge Base, saved state, and attacked.

I just wanted to follow up in this thread regarding SimonBob’s strategy, for, with a little tweaking, it just worked for me. I’m playing through EarthBound for the first time in a few years, and decided to try and get every 1/128 item, so my questions about the operation of EarthBound’s random number generator led me here. I just don’t wanna gain too m,any levels and end up killing the difficulty AND the playthrough. I actually didn’t know that! I think I’ll try that! I am trying to get the sword fairly, i.e. So it’s not a bad trick to try out at least once.) (I’ve used the grind-reset trick to get myself a sword as low as level 50 on the console before, and at that level, the extra offense really does make a difference for Poo. If you want a Sword of Kings without having to go through a lengthy process, use the debug menu if you just don’t want to gain too many levels, save at the telephone in Andonuts’ lab, get to the Starman Super area with as few fights as possible, then grind until you either get the sword, at which point you celebrate and carry on, or gain between five and ten levels per character depending on your personal preference, whereupon you reset the game so your levels go back down again. Sounds to me like it’d be about as tedious as the normal way. Keep going, adding another open-close each time, until you get it. It’d be something like this: open, close, fight the SS if you don’t get the sword, reload the state, open and close twice, and fight again. The best way to hack the system is to press B or Select twice to open and close the status window - that changes the seed every time you do it. Continued abuse of our services will cause your IP address to be blocked indefinitely. If you keep approaching the Starman Super the same way, it’ll never change the random number generator seed, so you’ll never get the sword.
